CSP-Meridian Partnership on the FIU Initiative
The Center for the Study of the Presidency (CSP) and the Meridian International Center are working together to create and capitalize a Foundation for International Understanding (FIU). This grant-making foundation would support the use of educational, entertainment and interactive media to foster respect and understanding across borders, cultures, and religions.
Corporation for Public Diplomacy
CSP began this initiative in 2003 with the release of its report Strengthening U.S.-Muslim Communications. This report included a proposal, originally recommended by the Council on Foreign Relations, to create a Corporation for Public Diplomacy. This proposed nonprofit Corporation would utilize private sector expertise to strengthen U.S. public diplomacy.
Foundation for International Understanding
In 2004, CSP President David Abshire testified before a House Appropriation Subcommittee about this recommendation. Following his testimony, the Subcommittee asked CSP to develop a business plan for the proposed Corporation. After extensive consultations with international communications professionals and Members of Congress, CSP recast the proposed Corporation as a grant-making Foundation for International Understanding. CSP-Meridian Partnership
The Center has partnered with Meridian to expand outreach internationally. Together we will:
- Build support for the Foundation for International Understanding among corporations, foundations, and other potential financial contributors and co-funding partners;
- Form an International Advisory Group of media content providers to assist our efforts; and
- Continue to explore innovative ideas for engaging and connecting around the world through all types of media.
