Foundation for International Understanding

The Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress is the only organization that systematically examines past successes and failures of the Presidency and relates its findings to present challenges and opportunities. Lessons learned from past American experiences offer insights on how to deal with these challenges.

Many organizations and social entrepreneurs cooperating to create the Foundation for International Understanding (FIU) are already demonstrating the power of media and interactive technologies to promote mutual understanding, as the success stories below illustrate. The FIU will substantially increase the resources available to develop these types of ventures.

Impact Games released Peacemaker, an interactive simulation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that teaches players the arduous process of making peace and the tragic consequences of violent conflict.

Meedan launched a social networking site that uses state-of-the-art machine translation technology, developed in cooperation with IBM, to connect Arabic speakers and English speakers online.

Dancing Ink Productions initiated its Understanding Islam through Virtual Worlds project to explore methods of dialogue and collaboration between Muslim and non-Muslim in online immersive environments and multi-player games.

Search for Common Ground launched a television series in Nigeria to address issues such as interethnic violence, corruption, and HIV/AIDS. The series is broadcast nationwide on Nigeria’s three national networks.

Empower Peace hosted a three-way video-conference that brought together students from Boston, Kuwait, and Edinburgh to engage in open dialogue. This marked the sixth video-conference connecting American students with their peers abroad for real-time interaction via broadband Internet.

Layalina Productions launched a reality TV series called On the Road in America, which features Arab youths discovering America’s diversity as they travel across the country. This series, broadcast throughout the Middle East by the satellite network MBC, was the second most watched show in its timeslot.

America Abroad Media and CNN Turk co-hosted a televised town-hall meeting between American and Turkish students and government officials in Istanbul, Ankara, and Washington. Connected via satellite, participants discussed the full range of U.S.-Turkish relations.
